Experience the magic of ice skating outdoors FREE OF CHARGE from August 15-31 10am-5pm daily. Skate rental and sharpening available by donation The skating rink is back for some summer action! Good morning to all, it is a lovely sunny morning and we're going to have brilliant weather Friday and Saturday!

To kick off the weekend early, head out to the shops at Morgan Crossing, 24th Avenue & Croydon Drive, tonight to catch Avatar on the Outdoor Movie Screen. There will be food, prizes and activities starting at 7 pm and then the movie will start at dusk. It is sure to be a great night, so bring your blanket and chairs and they will provide the rest! Friday you will be able to take advantage of the great sunny weather and go on a free guided walk with the Beach Heroes on Crescent Beach at 11 am - meet at Beecher St. You can learn about the small-scale world right under your feet on the beach. Friday night you're in for another outdoor movie treat, the White Rock BIA will be showing The Goonies on a movie screen near the White Rock. Saturday will be a great chance for you to come down to the beach and check out the long awaited opening of the White Rock Museum & Archives. The visiting exhibit that they have is titled "Aliens Among Us" and it is talking about alien species in BC. There will be lots to explore there so come check it out. You can always come down to the beach and check out the Summer Music in Semiahmoo Park, this weekend will be Blues but it will not leave you blue. The event is from 3 pm till 8 pm and you can get tickets by calling 604-501-5566.

Sunday you could check out the Cinemazoo at 1395 176 St. there will be music, prizes, food and a petting zoo. Admission is by donation and this will be a wonderful family event. For more information call 604-299-6963.

The Cloverdale Blueberry Festival and kicks off this Saturday. It's such to be a blast with events such as a car show, a vendors market, a talent showcase, and of course, the pie eating contest! Another great event this weekend is a Garden party fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society's Camp Good Times.

The event will be benefiting children living with cancer and is in honor of longtime volunteer Jean Nielsen-MacPherson's 80th birthday. The event runs August 7th from 1pm-5pm at 16655 27th ave. There will be music, refreshments, and a 50/50 draw.

Team Kisses For Coltan

B.C.'s littlest insulin-dependant diabetics, Coltan Daniel, was just nine months old when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2009. Since then, Team Kisses For Coltan, raised $18,000 for the foundation. The team is holding a cocktail gala evening at Belle's Restaurant in South Surrey on July 23. Highlights include a photo booth, door prizes and auctions. Items up for bid include a team signed Canucks jersey, Lions football and Whitecaps game packages, a war plane flight for two, a family photography session and much more. BC Cancer Foundation will benefit from another bikini car wash event taking place at the Splashes location at Surrey Auto Mall this Saturday, July 23. On site sponsors include Thrifty Foods, Surrey-based Russell Brewing and The Fox radio station.

Join us on the streets of White rock as some of the world's best cyclists roll into town (literally!) for this weekend's Tour de White Rock.

-This is a brand new addition to this years race where amateurs are given the chance to show what they're made of. The Just Giver Amateur Hill Climb is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday (just before the pros compete in the hill climb) and offers amateurs a shot at tackling the same grueling, 700-metre hill on Buena Vista Avenue. The Just Giver Amateur Hill Climb is a cycling club of about 40 members raising awareness for Parkinson's disease. Come out and support an excellent cause!

This weekend marks the opening of the 38th Annual Arnold Mikelson 'Festival Of Arts'.

"The Festival Of Arts takes place throughout three acres of beautiful gardens located at13743 16th Avenue, South Surrey, BC.

Mr. Mikelson and his wife Mary organized the first festival over thirty years ago with a handful of artists and a dream to bring original art to the community. Today the Festival has grown to be one of the largest art exhibitions in the area. This weekend also marks the beginning of the 'Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship'.

"The 2011 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship will be held from July 9 - 17, 2011, in Surrey, British Columbia and will promote the development of the sport of fastpitch by helping young female athletes reach for their personal best."

Arts & Life EditorThe third annual Ocean Park Idol talent contest happens this Saturday night (June 11) at the community hall there, with nine contestants in the running.

Finalists at the 7 p.m. showdown are Chanel Stasiuk, Monica Taillefer, Brett McCrady, Rachael Goddyn, Amanda Grundle, Jenny Kalicharan, Anusha Joshi & Sarah Loken, and Shelby Noble. Winner of the 2011 Idol crown will be featured at Ocean Park Day, held the following Saturday (June 18), outdoors at 128th Street and 16th Avenue. Campbell Valley Regional Park

Our area is filled with beautiful wilderness. Just 15 minutes out of White Rock is Campbell Valley Regional Park.

Campbell Valley Regional Park is a 535 hectare (1400 acre) park in South Langley, close to the Canadian/US border. This area of Langley is a popular horse riding area, and the park trails are often shared by both pedestrians and equestrians. Facilities include the Visitor Centre and Wildlife Garden, Old Orchard Group Picnic Area, Coyote Group Camp, Equestrian Centre, Heritage school and farmhouse, and 20 Km of trails through meadows and forest.

A Fun Filled Day Ahead

If you picked today to visit the White Rock and Surrey area, then you are in luck!
It seems like the trend is to spend the day in Surrey and come to White Rock for the evening.

Whether you like blueberries or outdoors, you will find something fun to do today. Spend time at the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival or check out the Forest Fun activities at the Surrey NAture Centre. (Both these events are previously mentioned in our blog, check them out for more information)

Then, come to White Rock and get some fish and chips before you see the Surrey Show N' Shine Cruise through White Rock. After checking out the cars and live music at Semiahmoo Park you can head up to Central Plaza to see an outdoor movie, Happy Feet!

There are endless possibilities! If you have not yet made plans, you can always spend the day at the beach and get some ice cream or gelato and enjoy the sunshine.

Cloverdale Blueberry Festival Show N' Shine Cruise to White Rock

Everything is gearing up for the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival. If you like blueberries, this is the place to be! The festival spans the weekend from 9 am till 5 pm, with various event locations.

There is a show and shine that features our beautiful seaside community, the Surrey Show N Shine "Cruise to White Rock Beach". The Show and Shine is in Cloverdale, at 176 St and 176A St, from 9 am till 5 pm. The Cruise to White Rock Beach starts at 5:30 pm, once the cars reach Semiahmoo Park there will be a BBQ and Entertainment.

There is a vendor market at 176 St. and 56A Avenue. Also there is a Family Zone, located at Clover Square Village Stage, which includes various activities that are fun for the whole family.

At the Surrey Museum Plaza there will be an Art Festival from 10 am till 4 pm.

Head down to the Fraser Downs Race Track for a Tractor Pull, which also features a BBQ and live music.

You just have to check it out, it is on for 2 days but the special Show N' Shine "Cruise to White Rock Beach" is SATURDAY only.

Just a heads up: If you're looking for a family activity this weekend, look no further than Saturday, August 14, because there are two coming up close to home!

At 10am, head over to Surrey Nature Centre at 14255 96 Avenue to check out Forest Fun for Families, a free event that goes until 1pm. Check out cool interactive exhibits, go on a scavenger hunt and more!

Then, at 7pm, head to Central Plaza here in White Rock with your blankets and chairs. It's the White Rock Business Improvement Association's third free outdoor movie, Happy Feet.

Waterfront Concert Series

Trees of the North West Coast

Living in BC we are use to the lush green scenery which constantly surrounds us. It is not until we leave the North West that many of us realize how green our area is. Even sitting here on the beach, trees surround. According to the UBC geography website there are more than 50 species of trees native to BC. White Rock: A History. Chapter One- Establishment

Hello everyone.

For the month of August, we will be telling White Rock's bountiful history in four parts. This is a brief telling of White Rock's modern history, and how it came to be what it is today.

The Straits Salish people dominated the region from Boundary Bay in the north to Birch Bay in the south (in the U.S.). Semiahmoo First Nation permanent encampments were known to exist between 1791, the first white contact, and the 1850s, the beginnings of white settlement. These were located along the waterfront at the eastern and western limits of the present City of White Rock. White Rock is part of Canada because of the Oregon Treaty of 1846, creating the border between Great Britain (which Canada used to be) and the United States.

The famous white rock that gave our city its name was a major navigational tool for European settlers and throughout White Rock's nautical period. Though it receives an annual coat of white paint, it is naturally light in colour and served as a beacon for sailors.

The original White Rock townsite was homesteaded in 1886 by a family who promptly subdivided their property and sold the lots. By 1887, the British Columbia Directory was promoting Semiahmoo Bay as “the Naples of B.C.” and predicted it would become a popular resort. This prediction was quite accurate. With the implementation of the railroad in 1909, White Rock became a major "sun spot" for residents of New Westminster, Vancouver and Seattle. This would begin the popularization of "Canada's Riviera", White Rock.

White Rock Buskers and Entertainers

As some of you may not know, it does not have to be the long weekend for you to find entertainment along the beach and around the city. Some of the entertainers for the Spirit of the Sea festival also busk in White Rock throughout the summer.

Max Tell is one entertainer who will be on the Spirit Stage on Saturday and Sunday of the Sea Festival, but he also regularly busks around White Rock.

PSYCH FILMING

For all of you who can't get enough of Psych, and those of you who are regular visitors of our beautiful beach, you should be aware that on Wednesday August 4 they will be filming season 5 of Psych. Starting at 7:30 am there will be prop guns and gunfire! Around 9:00 am there will be a helicopter flying low, a chase down the promenade, and a couple scenes under the pier!

The public washrooms across from the pier will be close and alternative restrooms will be made available. There will also be intermittent pedestrian control.

The Pier will be closed at various times of the day up until 5 pm.

Filming will finish around 8:00 pm, crews will be around until about 10 pm.

Come in for more information about the filming or anything else going on in our community!

The Oh Wells

The fast approaching Spirit of the Sea Festival is an excellent time to enjoy local artists and entertainers who will be part of the events. Over the next few days we will highlight some of the great acts you can catch, such as The Oh Wells.

The Oh Wells are out of White Rock and have been numerous playing shows in and around greater Vancouver and beyond. Here's what their website has to say about them:

"Hello! We are the Oh Wells. This is our story. Once upon a grade 9 art table, two girls would fatefully sit next to each other. One day their lives would change a little bit. One was named "Sarah", she was a pianist of the almost highest degree and said "oh well" a lot. The other was called "Molly." She sometimes liked to try to play guitar and she liked how Sarah said "oh well" a lot. Years later they have joined forces to create a band which, during a very sleep deprived conversation, received it's name..."THE OH WELLS." They are pretty nice girls and also really like to make, and eat, cupcakes. Unlike many other bands with two girls, they are neither lesbians nor sisters.Also they both have very sad love lives (ie. none) which is a great inspiration for pretty much all of their songs. Tired of their onstage loneliness the girls searched all the lands and found Dan, a man with good hair and a bass, and Nathan, a man with a drumset and a dream..."

We wanted to update you as soon as possible. We just received the bulletin of filming for Psych that will take place on Wednesday, August 4th. They will be set up all day from around 7:30 am till 10 pm. I don't want to give anything away but a very interesting stunt will be filmed from 3 pm - 6 pm. This will be something to see so everyone come down and check it out!!!!

Outdoor Movie number two!

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you all a heads up on the next outdoor movie in the Great Outdoors Film Festival, which is on the 30th of July at dusk. It's Blue Hawaii, a classic 1961 film starring Elvis Presley, who recorded the soundtrack.

A quick plot summary:
Chad Gates has just gotten out of the Army, and is happy to be back in Hawaii with his surf-board, his beach buddies, and his girlfriend. His father wants him to go to work at the Great Southern Hawaiian Fruit Company, but Chad is reluctant. So Chad goes to work as a tour guide at his girlfriend's agency.

The movie will be shown at Semiahmoo Park on East Beach. Bring a lawn chair, blankets and your family and friends. Enjoy the show!

What is with the red water?

People have been asking us here at the White Rock Visitor Centre about the red water. Why is it a strange, rusty colour? Is it dangerous? Is it Red Tide?

The answers:

The underwater algae are blooming, and will continue blooming for a the nexy couple of weeks. As a result, the red shows through. It is indeed completely safe to swim in.

Also this not the red tide disease that infects Shellfish although we do still have red tide, you can not see it.

Flavours of Surrey on July 25th

If you like food, then this is the event for you. Flavours of Surrey is an outdoor food tasting event put on by the City of Surrey’s Agricultural Advisory Committee. The event will be held at the Historic Stewart Farmhouse on July 25th from noon (12 pm) until 4 pm.

The Historic Stewart Farmhouse is located at 13723 Crescent Road.

Purchase your tickets ahead of time to get this once a year opportunity to taste the Flavours of Surrey. There will be food tasting as well as a Farmer's Market and music entertainment. Bring the kids out for a fun afternoon, there will be farm animals and interactive activities for children. Plus children 8 and under get in free.

White Rock beach is now a full on Blue Zone!

From anywhere on the beach, you can access the web from your smartphone or laptop.
In addition, free updates and videos on events, etc. in White Rock will be sent to phones with bluetooth capabilities. You will only be asked to accept once, so don't worry about being bombarded. With the advent of wireless technological networking, you will never be without something to do in White Rock.

In other news, the Celebration of Light fireworks competition begins tonight at 10:00pm in Vancouver's English Bay (only a 45 minute drive/transit trip from here), with the USA's tribute to the Big Band era. The other performances are:

Spain on July 24th.
Mexico on July 28th.
China on July 31st.
So head to English Bay to see at least one show! They're free and simply spectacular.

The beach today is filled with the excitement of the legendary Tour de White Rock. Come down and eat at one of the many restaurants that are on the route.The Tour de White Rock Road Race is one of the most prestigious and historic races in North America, this year is the 31st year that White Rock has hosted the race. The race today is a grueling 130 km test of endurance and attrition. Semiahmoo Bay and Mount Baker provide picturesque backdrops as spectators line the waterfront or watch the action from restaurants along Marine Drive. The finish line and announcer stage are set up on Marine Drive near the Pier washrooms. The corner of Marine and Vidal is particularly exciting.
Best places to park:

Centennial Arena: 14600 North Bluff Road

Free Parking. Take the FREE shuttle to the beach every 20 mins. from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Semiahmoo Park Parking Lot: Parker Street and Marine Drive

When watching the races, please follow these common-sense rules:

* Do not walk or ride on the course at any time, including between races.
* Do not lean out over the fence or sit on the curb with your feet in the road. The racers will sometimes use the entire road without warning.
* If you need to cross the racecourse, make sure to look for oncoming cyclists or support vehicles. The cyclists will be moving just as fast as a car would! Usually, the best time to cross during the race is immediately after the pack of riders has gone by. Do not cross near corners where you cannot see oncoming traffic.
* Avoid sitting too near the road in unfenced areas, particularly near sharp turns. Crashes are an occasional occurrence and a rider may fall off the course.
* Pay close attention to small children or pets to prevent their straying onto the race course.

The Hill Climb is an exciting dash to the top of Buena Vista Avenue in the heart of White Rock. This grueling climb takes brute power and strength to successfully conquer the steep 700-metre ascent.

Best spots to watch the race: Any spot on the North side of Buena Vista allows you to cheer on the racers and take in the gorgeous views of Semiahmoo Bay. Choose to set up halfway up the hill at the first crest near the stage or watch the riders at the finish line at the top of the hill.

Best places to park:

Street parking is available on all side streets near the race route.
White Rock Waterfront / Marine Drive ($2/hour): 14500 block to 15700 block
Walk north on Oxford (behind White Rock Muffler) to the start line for the Hill Climb.

If you're looking for something to do on these hot summer days, come down to the beach and see everything it has to offer. There are quaint boutiques and little cafes as well as casual dining restaurants and various ethnic foods. You might like to walk out the historic pier and look back and our beautiful city, or try and catch a glimpse of a starfish on the rocks.

Maybe today is the day that you'll try skim boarding since White Rock beach has so many tidal pools to enjoy. Or you might take a look through the White Rock Museum and Archives and see their Big Sand exhibit which showcases pictures from the sandcastle competition that used to take place on our beach. From that you might be inspired to make your own sand creation.

As you can tell there is an endless amount to explore on White Rock beach that you really must come down to enjoy it all!

Yesterday, the White Rock Museum and Archives plaza played host to the second installment in the Waterfront Concert Series, Chico and Tim, an exciting acoustic duo.

The plaza was also the home of our friendly and knowledgable Waterfront Greeters. All citizens of White Rock/South Surrey, the Greeters are a group of dedicated volunteers who want to promote White Rock's wonderful attributes far and wide. They will be out under their tent every saturday and sunday, welcoming, advising and handing out White Rock souvenirs to tourists. So come on by and get to know White Rock better than you ever thought you could. While you're there, try to get a perfect score on this year's White Rock Waterfront Quiz! A prize will be drawn in September from all the quizzes with 100% correct answers, so do your best! It's free to enter.

Cultural concert series returns to Peace Arch State Park

Olympia – July 8, 2010 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission Folk Arts in the Parks Program invites the public to attend the Peace Arch International concert series at Peace Arch State Park in Blaine.

The free outdoor concerts begin 2 p.m. Sundays in August. The event celebrates the Pacific Northwest’s international cultures and features Croatian, Hmong, Vietnamese and Mexican cultural dance and music. The artists’ fees for the concerts are paid for by an Arts and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act “economic stimulus” grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to Northwest Heritage Resources of Lake Forest Park.

The schedule of events includes:

Aug. 8 – Ruže Dalmatinke and Bonaca: These two musical ensembles are based in the Anacortes- and Seattle-area Croatian ethnic communities. Three sisters of the immigrant Franulovic family lead Ruže Dalmatinke: Alma Plancich, Maria Petrish and Binki Spahi. They have toured North America and Europe and performed at the Statue of Liberty Centennial in 1976. Bonaca is a newer, all-male vocal ensemble. Both groups perform the music and songs of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Aug. 15 – Hmong Association of Washington: Performers include musicians Chong Moua Vue on the xim xos, a bowed string instrument; Blia Ya Xiong on the qeej, a bamboo wind instrument; the dance group Paj Ntshia Nplaim Haam, featuring Jenny, Sheng and Mee Hang and traditional singers A Ying Cha Hang and Lao Xiong. Yee Xiong of the Hmong Association of Washington and ethnomusicologist Jill Linzee of Northwest Heritage Resources will explain and interpret the performances. The Hmong are a mountain tribal people from Laos who came to North America as refugees following the end of the Vietnam War.

Aug. 22 – Hướng Việt Performing Arts Group: This troupe of musicians and dancers from the Everett and north King County area is the Northwest’s leading ensemble of traditional Vietnamese music and dance. Founded and directed by Việt-Hải Hồng of Everett, the group has performed on many stages in the United States, Canada, Vietnam and most recently, Shanghai.

Aug. 29 – Los Bailadores del Sol: This folklórico dance ensemble from Washington’s Yakima Valley performs the dances of Mexico’s many regions and an interpretation of the Aztecan dance tradition. Known for its spectacular Mexican regional and historic costumes, the group includes children, youth and adult performers. Established in 1982 by Basilio Rodríguez, Boks Deloza and Cynthia Sifuentes have led the group since 2009.

Peace Arch State Park is in Blaine, adjacent to the Peace Arch Port of Entry, where Interstate 5 and British Columbia Highway 99 connect. From the American side of the border, take Exit 276 from I-5. From the Canadian side, enter through Peace Arch Provincial Park from Highway 99’s Beach Avenue exit.

This concert series is part of the sixth season of a broader series of events celebrating Washington's diverse cultures. The Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program is a partnership between the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, the Washington State Arts Commission and Northwest Heritage Resources. Funding support is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, through both a program grant and the Arts and the Washington State Arts Commission and the Washington State Parks Foundation. The Renfrew Collingwood Aboriginal Youth Canoe Club (RCAYCC) is a youth led program based in Vancouver that offers Aboriginal youth opportunities to participate in traditional canoeing practices. The program offers healthy, outdoor activities, building canoe and water safety skills, increasing cultural knowledge and canoe protocols as well as socializing positively with Aboriginal youth and role models.
Through these activities the focus is on Aboriginal youth between the ages of 10 to 29 to learn new skills, enhance their leadership roles and encourage them to lead programs and activities and become more involved in community life.
The Pulling Together Canoe Journey began 10 years ago with the vision of having police officers travel with Aboriginal peoples’ in canoes, paddling the traditional highways and visiting Aboriginal Communities along the way in hopes of building bridges between Aboriginal people and law enforcement
officers. The Pulling Together Canoe Society mandate is: Recognizing the past by Pulling Together to enhance understanding between Public Service Agencies and Aboriginal Peoples by Canoeing the traditional highway, strengthening our future relations.

With the recent announcement of the cancellation of the Women’s Division of the 2010 Canada Cup International Women’s Fastpitch Tournament, the original Host Team, the White Rock Renegades, will continue what the Canada Cup Host Committee worked so hard to achieve with their two youth divisions by forming a new committee to host the 2010 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship. This will include a Futures (U19) Division and a Showcase (16U) Division.

The 2010 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship will be held from July 5 - 11 in Surrey, British Columbia and will carry on the Canada Cup spirit of promoting the development of the great game of softball by helping young female athletes reach for their personal best both on and off the field.

This seven (7) day event will feature many of the best elite level youth teams vying for the title of Canadian Open Fastpitch International Champion! Waterfront Concert Series and RCMP visits

Here's more than one reason to come down and check out White Rock beach on this blustery Sunday.

First of all, today is one of the days when the RCMP in Red Serge are walking the promenade just waiting to be in a picture with you. The RCMP come out every second Sunday to stroll along the beach. You can also catch them on July 18, August 1 and August 29.

Secondly, this weekend is the beginning of the Waterfront concert series in front of the White Rock Museum and Archives. Today a jazz duo is performing from 2 until 4 pm, and we invite you to come down and check them out. The waterfront concert series happens every Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 pm, weather permitting. This morning, a project began that will change the way locals and tourists alike operate at White Rock beach.

A WiFi network that encompasses the promenade area, from the Sandpiper pub to the West Beach Bar and Grill will be available soon, and will be free of charge. This allows people to log in whenever and wherever on the beach, via a number of strategically placed hotspots. All you need is a wireless device.

In addition, Tourism White Rock will release a smartphone app and a bluetooth signal that will keep everyone up to date on events, tourist attractions and more. The combination of all of these FOR FREE has never been done before. White Rock is the first city to do it!

Get ready everyone, White Rock is going high-tech.

Half of jade that is in the whole world is in B.C.! It was commonly used by the first nations people for knives, axe heads, and later for jewelery and sculptures. this green rock is British Columbia's official gemstone.

The Ogopogo, the monster said to be living in Okanogan Lake,was first sighted by Europeans was actually 60 years before the first recorded sightings of the famous Loch Ness Monster. When crossing the river by boat the Okanagan Nation people would commonly bring along animals that could be sacrificed if the creature appeared. The Ogopogo, real or imaginary is protected by provincial laws that make it illegal to capture, kill or annoy the creature

The rainiest day in Canadian history occurred in Ucluelet on October 6, 1967, when 1870 millimeters of rain fell in one day!!! Lucky for us White Rock, South Surrey boasts the mildest climate in British Columbia.

The Lions, Vancouver's CFL football team was named after the distinctive twin peaks in the North Shore. Their name was chosen after a contest was haled in the local media.

Hello everyone!

While you are just waiting for your work day to be over think about what you are going to do this weekend! Around our area there are multiple fun excursions to do as a family or with a bunch of friends.

All these events are happening on Saturday, July 26th.
Check out the Annual Firefighters Charity Volleyball tournament happening at Centennial Park or take the kids to a fun filled day celebrating parks at the Park Play Palooza at the Cloverdale Athletic Park. Also there is the SNAP-iversary put on by Nature Matters at Green Timbers Lake.

You could always plan your own park day closer to home, take a picnic and just enjoy what nature has to offer.

Pacific North Coast Wildlife

Another great day at the beach! The weather has been off and on through the day, but seems to have settled on decent. As I look over the waters which surround me here on the beach I have began to wonder what creatures are out there. Here are some of the animals that reside in our Pacific North Coast Waters:

Harbour Seals
Harbour seals are the most likely marine mammals to be seen by visitors to coastal British Columbia. Curious, sleek, and so at home in the water, their round heads and whiskers peek just above the surface. Watch for them also on offshore rocks, where they may gather in numbers to loaf and sleep, their varied pelage blending well with the rocky substrate.

Sea Otters and River Otters
Once eliminated from the coastal waters of British Columbia by fur traders after their thick pelts, sea otters have been successfully reintroduced to their native habitat, where their future now seems secure. They are seen only in the area of the Brooks Peninsula on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and the Goose Islands, off the central coast of BC.

Whales
The most common whales in BC waters are the Killer Whale (Orca), Gray, and Humpback Whale. Others include Beaked, Black Right, Blue, Davidson's, Dwarf Sperm, False Killer, Fin, Finback, Herring, Minke, North Pacific Bottle-nosed, Pacific Pilot, Pacific Right, Piked, Pollack, Right, Sei, Sharpheaded Finner, Short-finned Pilot, Sperm, and Sulphur-bottom Whales.

Sealions
Two species of sea lions occur in BC waters; the Steller's Sea Lion and California Sea Lion. Distinguished from Harbour Seals by their longer necks and external ears, sea lions gather at haulouts, where the two species loaf side-by-side. From December to April, sea lions converge on the east side of Vancouver Island to feed on herring that are returning to spawn.

Dolphins and Porpoises
Dolphin species in the waters of British Columbia include the Baird's, Common, Euphrosyne, Hookfin, Long-beaked, Northern right-whale, Pacific Striped, Pacific White-sided, Risso's, Saddle-backed, and the Striped Dolphin. Porpoise species inhabiting BC waters include the Dall's porpoise, Harbor, Spray, Streaker, White-bellied, and the White Flank porpoise.

Sun is joyous, warm and inviting; but did you know that there are health benefits to sun rays? They kick off the chemical and metabolic chain reaction that produces vitamin D. Research shows that many people have low vitamin D levels. There is a well-documented relationship between low vitamin D levels and poor bone health. Now links have been made to everything from multiple sclerosis to prostate cancer. “Linking” low vitamin D with these diseases doesn’t prove cause-and-effect, but it suggests that possibility. Getting some sun may also shake off the wintertime blues: Research suggests that light hitting your skin, not just your eyes, helps reverse seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Moreover, being outside gets us golfing, gardening, and engaging in other types of physical activity.
Nobody wants to get skin cancer, but we’ve gone from sun worship to sun dread. Numerous doctors say there is a middle way that includes using a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 when you’re outside for an extended period and wearing a hat and shirt around midday. So when summer’s here, get outside and enjoy it!

Today they are filming at the White Rock Museum and Archives, right next to us! We encourage you to come down and check it out, you may even get to be in the background. Legend of the White Rock - Conclusion!

Nearby was a large light coloured rock, and he replied “See this stone?” and with the strength of a Samson, he raised the rock saying “This stone will guide us to our new home. I will hurl it over the waters and wherever it lands we will live.” With a mighty heave he threw the rock over the Gulf of Georgia. As it rose over the mountains, the son of the Sea God took his Indian princess in his arms and dived into the sea in the direction of the great boulder.

It was on the sandy shores of Semiahmoo Bay that he found the rock had landed, and here they made their home and called it WHITE ROCK. From their children and their children’s children, a mighty tribe grew up around the Bay.

Strange as is this story, the Semiahmoos spoke a dialect understood by the Cowichans of Duncan, although Coast Indians of different tribes rarely understood each other’s dialects. Could it be that the romance of the legend bears some semblance to the truth?

In actuality, the City of White Rock has a more practical explanation of how it received its name. First of all, the 80% white landmark is just a glacial deposit from an Ice Age. The early mariners used this easily sighted marker on the beach as a navigational point and painted it white so it was outstandingly visible in all weather.

Legend of White Rock

The Song of the Winds at Semiahmoo Bay is a love song from its long past. The Indian legend tells of the time long ago when a Sea God dominated the entire Pacific Coast and lived in a cavern beneath the sea near Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island.

The son of the Sea God one day rose to the surface from the cavern to find an Indian princess, daughter of the Chief of the Lummis, the Cowichan Bay tribe, bathing in the water. It was love at first sight and he took the beautiful maiden to his home beneath the sea.

The Sea God and the Indian Chief were angry at this union but the young couple were adamant. The son of the Sea God said “We will make a new home and establish our own tribe.” “But where?” asked his bride.
